Biography

Rudel Obreja was a Romanian boxer who competed as a welterweight and light-middleweight. Obreja competed at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics as a welterweight beating Antoine Longoudé and Mickey Hughes before losing to the eventual gold medal winner Mark Breland. In the same year he was the national welterweight champion. From 1987 to 1989 he won three more national titles as a light-middleweight. In 1989 Obreja won a silver medal at the European Amateur Championships and a bronze medal at the World Amateur Championships.

From 2004 to 2012 Obreja was the President of the Romanian Boxing Federation. During this time he was elected as the Vice-President of the International Boxing Association in 2007 and he worked in the capacity of the chief technical officer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In 2018 Obreja was sentenced to five years in prison for money laundering, tax evasion, and bribery. He was released from Jilava prison later the same year after the High Court accepted an appeal after the process for selecting the panel of judges was not done correctly. In April 2022, however, the decision was overruled, declaring it to be unfounded, with Obreja sent back to prison. Three months later the court ordered his release so he could undergo treatment for cancer in a civilian hospital.
