Biography

Slovenian all-round track and field athlete Breda Babošek competed in multiple disciplines from 1965 to 1981, setting four Yugoslav records in the pentathlon. Babošek began her international career in 1969, finishing eighth in the high jump at the European Indoor Championships. Her breakout year came in 1971 when she won bronze in both the high jump and the 4 x 100 metres relay at the Mediterranean Games, in addition to placing 16th in the high jump at the European Championships. These results earned her a place on the Olympic team for the 1972 München Games, but she failed to advance from the qualification round in the high jump.

Babošek continued to compete during the 1970s, becoming a seven-time Yugoslav champion, as well as the Balkan pentathlon champion in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1978. The following year she returned to the Mediterranean Games where she won silver in the pentathlon. That same year she was named as the best athlete in Slovenia.

Following her retirement Babošek worked as a coach for the junior teams at the Maribor Athletics Association. She then graduated from the Faculty of Sports in Ljubljana, working as a professor of physical education and creating a physical education curricula for schools. In August 2025 Babošek was involved in a car crash in Croatia, dying from her injuries a few months later.
