Biography

During the 1930s Serbian sprinter Julije Bauer was a six-time champion of Yugoslavia and a ten-time medallist at the Balkan Games. Bauer did the double in the 100 and 200 metres at the Yugoslavian Championships in 1934 and 1936, in addition to winning gold in the 200 metres in 1935, and gold in the 100 metres in 1937. At the 1934 Balkan Games Bauer won gold in the 100 metres, setting both a national and championship record in the process. At the same Games he also won silver in the medley relay and the 4 x 100 metres relay. He continued to win medals at the next four editions of the Balkan Games, finishing with gold in the medley relay in 1938. He ran in the 100 metres at the 1936 Berlin Olympics but did not advance from the heats. Bauer fought in World War II where he was killed in action in Pančevo in March 1945.
