Biography

Born in Freemantle, Australia in 1959 Ðani Kovač later moved to Yugoslavia where he became a successful track sprinter and hurdler. After initially joining Split ASK, Kovač then represented Dinamo Zagreb for more than a decade. He won his first title at the Yugoslavian Championships in 1959 with gold in the 400 metres hurdles, before retaining his title the following year. He won another three national titles in the event (1962, 1964–65), along with the 200 and 400 metres titles, both in 1961.

Kovač had an impressive record at the Balkan Games, winning more than a dozen gold medals during his career, including the 4 x 400 metres (1959–61, 1964–65), 400 metres hurdles (1960–61, 1964–65), 4 x 100 metres (1961), and the 400 metres (1961, 1964–65). He also set more than 20 national records across multiple disciplines, with some of the records standing for decades.

In 1960 Kovač made his first appearance at the Olympics where he was part of the quartet that ran in the 4 x 400 metres relay in Roma. Yugoslavia finished third in their heat to advance to the semi-finals before being eliminated. He returned to the Games four years later, this time running in the 400 metres hurdles in Tokyo. This time, however, Kovač was disqualified in his heat, and therefore did not advance further.

Personal Bests: 400 – 46.6 (1961); 400H – 50.9 (1964).
