Primarily a steeplechaser, Slavko Špan raced that event at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, but did not qualify for the final. He competed at the 1962 European Championship, placing ninth. He also won four medals in the steeplechase at the Balkan Games, with golds in 1963-64, silver in 1961, and bronze in 1965. Špan won 27 Yugoslavian titles and three times was a Slovenian champion. He was an agronomy engineer by profession but stayed involved in athletics, later becoming a judge and starter. For his athletic achievements he received the Gold Plaque of the Yugoslavian Athletic Association.
