Biography

Slovenian track and field athlete Milan Stepišnik specialised in the hammer throw, winning the Yugoslav national title in 1935 and 1937. Stepišnik had further success at the Balkan Games, winning three gold medals (1934, 1939–40), two silvers (1933, 1935), and one bronze (1937). In addition to competing in the hammer at the 1936 Berlin Olympics he also had the honour of being the flagbearer for Yugoslavia at the Opening Ceremony.

In September 1941 Stepišnik competed at an athletics meet in Italy where he refused to make the Nazi salute. At the end of 1943 he was imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp before being released the following year. In 1948 he was one of the defendants at the Dachau show trial in Ljubljana. Stepišnik was found guilty of allegedly being in co-operation with the Gestapo and was executed by a firing squad in 1950.
