Reginald Reed

The oldest of seven children of wealthy north-east grocer Walter John Reed and his wife Eliza, Reginald Reed went to Cambridge and after finishing his education there in 1900 he moved to London where he worked as a writer and that same year had his theological treatise on the Epistles of St. Paul published. He later returned to his native north-east to become Theological Exhibitioner at the University of Durham and received his MA in 1905. When he moved to London he joined the London Athletic Club and was part of the Great Britain team at the 1906 Olympics, and after winning his heat in the 100 Reed did not start in the second round. In the 400 he finished last in his heat. In a much publicised case, Reed was arrested following the theft of books from a London library in 1910 but, despite a court appearance, no further action was taken and the following year he married Lilian Rose Clarke the daughter of iron founder William Balfour Clarke. In 1918 Reed made an application for the Freedom of the City of London.
