Biography

After starting his career as a track and field athlete Eduard Riedl went on to become a senior physical education commissioner in Czechoslovakia. At the national athletics championships Riedl won three gold medals in the 4 x 400 metres relay (1923–24, 1927), and a gold in the 800 metres in 1924. His performance in the latter earned him a place on the Olympic team for that year’s Paris Olympics where he finished sixth in his heat. Riedl was also scheduled to run in the 1,500 metres in Paris but did not start the race.

By 1934 Riedl was working as the chief ministerial commissioner for physical education at the Ministry of Public Health before working at the Ministry of the Interior during World War II. Following the war, and the liberation of Czechoslovakia, Riedl transferred to the Ministry of Education, where he continued to work in physical education.
