In many places, including this site, this competitor was listed as (Eugenius) Antonius van Nieuwenhuizen. This was due to the fact that noted Dutch Olympic historian Tony Bijkerk identified the previously unnamed fencer as such. However, subsequent research by Henk Mees and Wim Zonneveld in a 2018 edition of the Journal of Olympic History showed that the fencer is Gerardus Christiaan Eugenius van Nieuwenhuizen, Antonius’s brother (or possibly half-brother). Gerardus was a sergeant major in the Dutch Army, and a fencing instructor at the miliary Normaal Schietschool in The Hague.
In the 1890s, Van Nieuwenhuizen regularly competed and won in Dutch military fencing competitions. He was an all-round sportsman, also competing in track, cycling, and shooting. Gerardus lived in The Hague with his wife, a former seamstress, and retired from the army in 1904. As a civilian, he still won an award at the shooting competitions at the 50th anniversary of the Normaal Schietschool.
