The son of Edwin Stevens Charnaud, who was a descendant of Jean Charnaud the first of the Charnauds to move to the Levant in the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century. The Charnauds were formerly French Huguenots who became naturalized Britons in 1762 by a special Act of Parliament and in Smyrna they lived and worked as merchants alongside the Whittall, Giraud, Joly and La Fontaine families who were all represented in the 1906 Olympic Smyrna football team for whom Charnaud played in goal. Edwin Charnaud was appointed the British Vice-consul at Mersin, Southern Turkey, in 1913. He later became a Churchwarden at St. Mary Magdalene’s, Bornova. He was a distant relative by marriage to Herbert Joly, a fellow Smyrna FC team-mate.
