Hugo Clason studied at the Technological Institute from 1884-86 before he became a dental student. In 1891 he graduated as a dentist. During the last years of his studies, he worked as assistant of the court dentist in Karlsruhe (GER) and the then German city of Colmar. In 1891, he settled in Stockholm and practised as a dentist. In addition, he served as dentist at the war school and for more than 20 years as an observer at dental exams. He also held various honorary position in professional organisations.
Clason married Syster Carolina “Calla” Krautmeyer in 1904. After the early death of his wife in 1913, he married his second wife, Jenny Elisabet Broms, and had one daughter with her. The son of a navy captain, Clason was the helmsman of the Erna Signe which placed second in both races behind the Norwegian Magda XI in the 12 metres class at the 1912 Olympics. Accordingly, the crew was awarded the silver medal. Owners of the Erna Signe were crew member Nils Persson and banker and stockbroker Nils Asp. The boat was designed by the Scotish yacht designer William Fife III (1857-1944) in 1911 and built on a shipyard in Stockholm. One year after the Olympics, the Erna Signe took revenge beating the Magda XI at the Kiel Week. Today the boat is part of the “Framnæs Collection of Classic Yachts”.
