Maria Gąsienica Bukowa-Kowalska was a cross-country skier who raced at the 1956 Cortina Winter Olympics, helping Poland to a fifth-place finish in the relay. She was a five-time Polish Champion and placed fourth at the 1958 World Championships. Gąsienica Bukowa-Kowalska was with Kolejarz Zakopane from 1952-58 and SNPTT Zakopane in 1959-60. In later life she worked as a ski instructor but also became known as a poet.
