Biography

Born in the Swiss Alps to a family of skiers, it was only natural that Silvia Glatthard would also take up the sport. Glatthard entered her first competitions when she was 17 and soon won the downhill and slalom races at the Swiss Junior Championships. When she was just 18-years-old she was part of the Swiss national ski team, with her named as a reserve for the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics. Two years later she was selected to ski at the 1950 World Championships in Aspen but broke her leg just prior to competing. Glatthard finally competed at a major international event when she skied in the downhill and giant slalom at the 1952 Oslo Olympics, finishing 15th and 29th, respectively. Her best international performances were fourth place on several occasions, with her also finishing on the podium at multiple races in Switzerland. Her husband, Alan, was also a skier and was the Swiss champion in 1935. The couple sold skis to customers across Switzerland and later ran a hotel in the Alps.
