When Bunty Greenland won the British Ladies title in 1947, she was believed to be the first mother to win the title, as she had a 2-year-old daughter at the time. It was Greenland’s only British title, as she beat Isobel Roe into second place. Roe had won the title in the last two years before the outbreak of World War II, in 1938 and 1939, and won it again in 1948 and 1949. Greenland was a member of the Whit Hare Ski Club, founded by her husband Donald and, in 1941, Bunty was elected a member of the famous Kandahar Club. Donald worked for Thomas Cook, taking British tourists skiing in Switzerland while his wife was a leading coach there. On 23 May 1955 Bunty Greenland changed her name from Margaret Mary Greenland to Bunty Stockwell. She died at the age of 85 but, for the last 12 years of her life, lived with the handicap of losing one of her legs to cancer. She maintained her wicked sense of humour, however, throughout adversity.
