German luger Gaby Kohlisch won the overall World Cup in 1994 but was never able to replicate that achievement at the Winter Olympics. She placed a disappointing sixth both at the 1992 Albertville and 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games in the women’s singles. At the World Championships, she was much more successful, winning six gold medals, winning the singles 1990 and 1995 and the other four with the mixed teams. She also won four silver medals (singles in 1987 for East Germany, 1991 and 1993 for Germany). She also won two silvers and one bronze at the Europeans.
Kohlisch later switched to bobsleigh and was the first two-man bobsleigh World Champion in 2000. However, she was never able to qualify for the Olympics in this sport. For many years she was an active spokesperson for the International Luge Federation, and since 1998 for the German team in Nagano.
