Biography
Steffi Walter-Martin was the first woman to win two Olympic gold medals for luge. She took the title in 1984 and 1988 and on each occasion led the East Germans to a clean sweep of the medals. She was also the World Champion in 1983 and 1985 and won the World Cup in 1984. Walter-Martin won the East German national title in 1983, and added two more silvers in 1985 and 1986.
After her career, Walter-Martin studied state law, and first worked in the district administration, but was later a physiotherapist. Due to injured intervertebral discs and wrists as a late consequence of her sports career, she retired on disability at age 45. In June 2017, Walter-Martin died after a battle with cancer, aged 54.
