Barbara Petzold became the first German cross-country Olympic Champion in 1980 in the 10 km and relay, after winning a relay bronze in 1976. She won four medals at the World Championships: silvers in 1974 in the 10 km and relay, in 1978 in the relay, and a bronze in the 1982 relay. Petzold won nine East German individual titles: 5 km (1981), 10 km (1977 and 1981), and 20 km (1974-75 , 1977-80), and six relay titles: 1973, 1975, 1977-78, 1980 and 1982. She married cyclist Lutz Beyer, makes her living as a lawyer, and is still active as a cross-country judge in the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS).
