Biography

Austrian alpine skier Roswitha Steiner participated at the 1984 Sarajevo and 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. She finished an unfortunate fourth in the slalom event on both occasions and 27th in the giant slalom in 1984. At the 1987 world championships she won the silver medal in the slalom as her greatest moment.

During the 1980s, Steiner was one of the world’s best slalom skiers and won the overall slalom world cup in 1986 and 1988. She was then elected Austrian Sportswoman of the Year in 1986. In total, she won eight world cup races.

Steiner married cross-country skier Alois Stadlober and their children Luis and Teresa Stadlober also became Olympic cross-country skiers. Steiner later engaged in local politics with the right-winged party ÖVP and was elected to the Salzburg state parliament from 1999-2004. In 2021 she was elected president of Austrian Ski Association – the first woman to hold the position.
