Austrian cross country skier Maria Theurl participated in the 1988 Calgary and 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. She competed in 1988 in two events: 5 km (34th) and 10 km (did not finish). In 1998, she came 15th over 5 km and did not finish the 10 km. She was sixth over 30 km, and 13th in the 5/10 km pursuit.
Theurl also appeared at six Nordic World Championships (Oberstdorf 1987, Lahti 1989, Val di Fiemme 1991, Falun 1993, Trondheim 1997, and Ramsau 1999). In 1999, she won the bronze medal over 15 km as her greatest international success.
Domestically, Theurl won 35 Austrian national titles. After her active career she turned to coaching and was responsible for the female youth national team. She married teammate Achim Walcher. Their daughter Witta-Luisa also became a cross-country skier, and their son Paul became a Nordic combined exponent.
