In the pre-World Cup era she won several FIS races in 1961-63, with her biggest moment coming in Innsbruck at the 1964 Winter Olympics when she took a silver medal in downhill. With fifth in the slalom and sixth in the giant slalom at Innsbruck, Zimmermann also added a World Championship silver medal in combined, which was not an Olympic event in 1964.
