Osleidys Menéndez was a Cuban javelin thrower who won gold at the 2004 Athina Olympics. She was twice World Champion, winning in 2001 and 2005, and won two gold medals at the Pan American Games, in 1999 and 2007, with a bronze at the Pan Ams in 2003. Menéndez set two world records in the javelin throw, with 71.54 in 2004 and 71.70 in 2005. She defected from Cuba after the 2012 season, stating that she was unhappy with her treatment there, and hoped to become a coach in the United States.
