Biography

Australian sportsman Ron Amess had a short career playing ice hockey, which saw him compete at local, state, and national levels. In the 1950s Amess represented the Wildcats in Melbourne, eventually being called up to the Victorian state team that won the Goodall Cup in 1953. In 1960 the Australian national team made their only appearance in ice hockey at the Olympics, as of 2024. Amess was selected as part of the squad to compete at the Squaw Valley Games where he played in five matches during the tournament. After the Olympics he played for Victoria, with the team winning back-to-back editions of the Goodall Cup in 1961 and 1962. Also in 1962 Amess played at the World Ice Hockey Championships where Australia won their first international match, beating Denmark 6–2. In 2000 he was named as a life member of the Australian Ice Hockey Federation.
