East German biathlete Birk Anders finished fourth in the 10 km sprint at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. At the World Biathlon Championships he won two gold medals (1989 in the 4x7,5 km relay and 1990 team event), and one bronze (1990 relay). He also won an individual gold and silver medal at the 1986 Biathlon Youth World Championships.
