Austrian bobsleigh athlete Paul Aste participated in three Olympic Games from Oslo 1952 to Innsbruck 1964. He failed to win a medal but came fifth in 1952 with the four men bob, 12th with the two-men bob in 1956, and seventh with the four-men bob in 1956. He was more successful with the two-men bob at World Championships and won a silver medal in 1955, and bronze in 1958.
In Innsbruck, Aste was chosen to recite the athletes’ oath at the opening ceremony. Later he became a member of the Austrian Bobsleigh Association. He was awarded the Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria.
Aste was considered one of the most successful Austrian lugers after World War II. He won seven medals in the European Championships, with five golds (men’s singles 1951, 1953, 1955, and men’s doubles 1952, 1955) and two silvers (men’s singles 1952, men’s doubles 1953).
