East German cross-country skier Uwe Bellmann finished ninth with the 4x10 km relay at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics. Individually, he finished seventh in the 15 km and tenth in the 30 km events, but did not finish the 50 km. At the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics he placed fifth over 15 km, 15th over 30 km, and eighth over 50 km, while at the 1982 World Championships he won a bronze medal with the 4x10 km relay.
After German re-unification Bellmann continued his career until 1998 with less success. Domestically, he won 7 gold, 10 silver and 3 bronze medals in East Germany, and also 8 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals in re-unified Germany. After his active career he turned to coaching and became chief national coach for several years until 2012.
