Biography

With 213 international matches played between 1976 and 1999, Ron Berteling is the most capped Dutch ice hockey player. He played for the Dutch team when it won back-to-back World titles in the C division (1978) and B divison (1979) to qualify for the 1980 Olympics. At the first (and only thru 2006) Olympic appearance of the Dutch team, they finished eight, and they relegated from the highest tier in 1981. His last match for the Netherlands came in 1999, when he was surprisingly called up to play in the World Championships (C division) at age 41. Domestically, Berteling never played outside his native country, spending his career with the Amsterdam Tigers and Rotterdam Pandas, winning one title with each. After his playing career, he became a coach with the Tijgers.
