Biography

In 1966 speed skater John Blewitt was involved in a car accident and injured his knee. Doctors told him his skating days were over. Two years later he was selected for the Grenoble Winter Olympics. An engineer and toolmaker by trade, Blewitt competed in the European Championships in Oslo before going to Grenoble, where he finished 27th out of 38.

Blewitt competed in the 1970 World Championships in Oslo and in 1972 took part in the Worlds, Europeans, and his second Olympics at Sapporo, when he competed in the 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 metres, setting a personal best 16:51.50 in the latter despite coming 23rd out of 24.

Personal Bests: 500 – 42.5 (1972); 1500 – 2:12.0 (1970); 5000 – 7:51.2 (1972); 10000 – 16:51.50 (1972).
