John Blockley was educated at Cranleigh School before being admitted into the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a cadet. He went on to enjoy a long career in the RAF where he attained the rank of squadron leader. Blockley also enjoyed the thrill of bobsleighing and had success across Europe in both two- and four-man bobs.
Blockley took part in the World and European Championships of 1965, 1966, and 1967 without medalling, but at Sankt Moritz (St. Moritz) in 1968, just weeks before the Grenoble Winter Olympics, he won bronze in the two-man event with Mike Freeman. Both men were stationed at RAF Manby at the time and after the first of four runs were in 11th place. With Freeman, Tim Thorn, and John Brown (all RAF men), Blockley added a second bronze in the four-man event. Blockley partnered Freeman at the Grenoble Games, and the same quartet also made up the GBII four, but Blockley failed to win a medal in both events.
