Biography

Tom Cairney finished in 28th place in the 50km cross-country at the Cortina Winter Olympics. It was the highest position achieved by a British cross-country skier at the Olympics until bettered by Andrew Musgrave’s 27th place finish in the 15 km at PyeongChang in 2018.

A former British champion, Cairney did two years National Service in the Army as a bombardier in the Royal Artillery. He served in the BAOR (British Army of the Rhine), and won the BAOR Skiing Championship. The month after the Cortina Olympics, Cairney took part in the World Military Skiing Championships. By profession, Cairney was a coachbuilder.
