Tom Dakin served for more than 20 years in the 1st Queen´s Dragoon Guards (QDG) and reached the rank of lieutenant. His older brother Ken also served in the QDG and retired as a major. The siblings were born at Battle, East Sussex, which was the site of the famous Battle of Hastings in 1066.
During his time in The Army, Tom became a fine cross-country skier and represented GB at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics, finishing 58th in the 15km event. He was one place above fellow 1st Queen´s Dragoon Guardsman Peter Tancock. Dakin was 68th in the Nordic Ski Championships at Oslo two years earlier.
