Biography

Matteo Demetz was an Italian cross-country skier who was active during the 1920s. At the Italian championships Demetz won three golds and a bronze at distances from 18 to 50 kilometres. He competed at the 1928 St. Moritz Olympics in the 18 and 50 kilometres events, finishing 22nd and 20th, respectively. He was only 39-years-old when he died in a hospital in Austria in June 1941. Demetz’s brother Vincenzo was also an accomplished cross-country skier, and his grand-niece Michela Ponza competed at four Winter Olympics as a biathlete.
