Biography

The son of Colonel William Dent, John Dent also enjoyed an Army career as a serving officer with the Royal Artillery. He was a member of the 40th Regiment, the leading skiing regiment in the British Army and winners of the Army Nordic Championship six years in succession between 1960-65. Two of his 1964 Olympic team-mates, Fred Andrew and David Rees, were also members of the same regiment.

Dent won both the BAOR (British Army of the Rhine) cross country skiing and biathlon titles in 1960 and two years later won a silver medal in the 15km cross country at the Commonwealth Winter Games. Dent won both the Army and BAOR biathlon titles in 1963 but was that year´s runner-up to [Roderick Tuck] () in the British Biathlon Championship.
