Kumiko Okamoto

Kumiko Okamoto was a Japanese tennis player who played professionally from 1983 to 1990. Okamoto achieved a career-best singles ranking of #75 in the world in April 1989, and a doubles ranking of #124 in the world in April 1988.

Okamoto won her first ITF doubles title in August 1983 in Ortisei, Italy, with her partner Emiko Okagawa. Okamoto’s only other ITF doubles title came later the same month, again with Okagawa, in Hechingen, West Germany. Okamoto won four ITF singles titles during her career with her first one coming in November 1984 in Kuroshio, Japan, when she beat Cheryl Jones. She also won one WTA singles title, this time at the 1989 Japan Open with a straight sets victory against Liz Smylie.

Okamoto’s best performance at a Grand Slam came at Wimbledon in 1987 when she reached the third round. The following year she competed in the singles and doubles at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, reaching the quarter-finals in the latter with Etsuko Inoue.
