A carpenter by trade, Vic Ekberg also played ice hockey in Australia throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. Ekberg played for both the Tigers and the Pirates in Melbourne, winning the Goodall Cup in 1954, 1955, and 1962. For the 1953–54 season he went to England where he played in the Southern Intermediate League. In 1960 he was selected as part of the Australian team at the Squaw Valley Olympics and also had the honour of being the flagbearer at the Opening Ceremony.
After his career Ekberg worked as an ice rink manager in St Kilda in southern Melbourne. For his contribution to the sport in the state he was awarded with life membership of Ice Hockey Victoria. The eponymous Vic Ekberg Trophy has also been awarded to the best team in the IHV Pee Wee junior grade.
