Swiss ice hockey player Rätus Frei began his career with HC Davos in the early 1950s before joining ZSC Zürich. Frei played his final matches in the 1960s with Aarau where he was a player-coach. His international career spanned 26 matches, with him competing at the 1956 Cortina d’Ampezzo Olympics. Following his playing career Frei worked as a technical adviser at ZSC Zürich in the late 1970s. He was only 52-years-old when he died from a heart attack while on holiday in Spain.
