Karl Gamma represented Switzerland in alpine skiing at the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics, but did not complete his only event, the slalom. He had much more success in the sport as an administrator, serving as the chief instructor for the Swiss Federation of Ski Schools from 1964 through 1992 and as chairman of Swiss Ski’s technical commission for almost as long. In 1970, he was elected the first president of the International Ski Instructors Association. He also penned a book on the history of the Swiss Ski Federation. He married, but later divorced, Renée Clerc, who placed fifth in the women’s slalom at the St. Moritz Games.
