In his youth, Noldi Gartmann was active in a variety of athletic pursuits, including boxing, wheel gymnastics, and schwingen, a type of Swiss wrestling, and made the Swiss national team in two sports: ice hockey and bobsledding. His prowess in the former sport took him to the 1924 European Championships, where Switzerland tied for Belgium for third place behind France and Sweden, but it was the latter that brought him the most success. Alongside Joseph Beerli, Charles Bouvier, and Pierre Musy, he won a silver medal at the 1935 World Championships. This quartet then travelled to the 1936 Winter Olympics, where they captured gold. Gartmann’s legacy was continued by his sons: Aby earned silver in the four-man at the 1955 World Championships and came in fourth at the 1956 Winter Olympics, while Arnold competed in luge at the 1964 Winter Games. By career Noldi was a bank clerk and he later owned and operated a cinema in St. Moritz.
