Biography

André Gegout was a French speed skater who competed over multiple distances at the 1924 Chamonix Olympics, with his best result coming in the 10,000 metres with 15th. In the 1,500 metres Gegout set an Olympic record, but only by the virtue of being in the first pair to skate in the event. His combined results across all four races placed him ninth overall in the all-round event.

During the summer months Gegout worked as a lifeguard, which saw him save the lives of several swimmers who had gotten into difficulty. During World War II he helped to save a German soldier who was drowning in a lake, which resulted in one of his brothers being freed from a labour camp in Austria. From 1945 to 1963 the Gegout brothers also ran a boating business that they took over from their father.

Personal Bests: 500 – 51.4 (1929); 1500 – 2:51.4 (1929); 5000 – 9:52.0 (1934); 10000 – 21:03.4 (1924).
