In the 1930s Edgars Gruzītis represented US Rīga where he competed in cross-country skiing and ski jumping. Gruzītis was a two-time Latvian champion in the Nordic combined, winning back-to-back titles in 1935 and 1936. This earned him a place on the Latvian Olympic team for the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games where he finished 42nd in his favoured event. He was also part of the cross-country team for the 4 × 10 kilometres relay that finished 13th. Gruzītis was only 38-years-old when he died in May 1950.
