Biography

Austrian ski jumper Helmut Hadwiger was the best national youth athlete from 1937-40. During World War II he fought with the German Wehrmacht and was severely wounded. One of his legs remained 5 cm shorter than the other and a he suffered a stiffened leg from a femur bullet fracture.

Hadwiger then finished 35th in the large hill event at the 1948 St. Moritz Winter Olympics. He later became an international judge and participated in the 1960, 1964, and 1976 Winter Olympics. In 1960, he captained the Austrian Nordic ski team.
