Villy Haugen was one of the surprises of the 1964 Olympic speed skating events. Known as a sprinter, he had only placed third in the 1,500 m at the Norwegian Championships earlier that year. But in Innsbruck, he surpassed his compatriots to earn an unexpected bronze medal. A member of SK Falken, the club that also produced Hjalmar Andersen, Sverre Farstad and Jan Egil Storholt, the Olympic bronze medal would remain Haugen’s best performance. He claimed 4 distance medals at Norwegian Championships, and represented Norway several times in country matches.
Personal Bests: 500 – 41.1 (1964); 1500 – 2:09.9 (1965); 5000 – 8:17.5 (1965); 10000 – 17:47.2 (1966).
