Biography

Ferenc Hemrik participated in ski jumping competitions in 1940 as a student at Toldy High School. From then on, he regularly participated in ski jumping competitions, starting in 1942 for MAC, and between 1943 and 1947 for BEAC. In the meantime, he went on alpine skiing and cross-country skiing, but his love remained with ski jumping. After the end of the war, he continued to collect championship golds, now as a Goldberger SE competitor. He started at the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics where he finshed 34th in ski jumping. At the beginning of the 1950s the ski division of the Bp. Honvéd sports association was established, and Hemrik also transferred there. At that time he was not only excited by his own results, but also by the professional issues of ski jumping, and he continuously developed his expertise. He soon became the coach of the ski jumpers at Honvéd, and although he competed until 1957 (age 32), his coaching work was primarily important and he subordinated his own competition results to coaching tasks.

From 1953, with minor interruptions, he coached the national ski jumping team for nearly 30 years. Many Hungarian champions owe their results to him, and his coaching and professional work was recognized by the fact that he was certified as a master coach in 1961. In the 1970s, he already gained an international reputation and was invited abroad as a ski jumping coach, but he did not receive permission to do so from the sports authorities. After missing several years, in the 1980s the federation asked him again to be the captain of the national ski jumpers for three years. He retired in 1985 and did not engage in skiing after that. His wife, Katalin Hellner, was an Olympian in cross-country skiing in Innsbruck (1964).
