Mats Hessel played most of his career from 1978-90 with AIK Solna, except his last season as an active player in 1989-90, when he was with Rögle BK. With AIK, Hessel won Swedish titles in 1982 and 1984. Internationally, Hessel was capped 19 times with the Swedish national team and won an Olympic bronze in 1984, his only major international tournament.
