After his competitive career ended, Urban Hettich made his living as a coach of the Canadian and Swiss Nordic combined as well as the Spanish cross country national teams, and also coached the Spanish cross-country skiers. His best performance in Nordic combined came at the 1976 Winter Olympics, winning the silver medal, and he also won three consecutive national championships from 1974 to 1976. In 1980, he was the West German flagbearer at the Lake Placid Winter Games in the opening ceremony. Urban Hettich is not related to the 2006 Olympic Champion Georg Hettich although both are from the same town, Schonach.
