Susumu Hirano started competing as a long-distance skater. While attending Manchuria Medical University in Mukden (now Shenyang) he was successful at the intercollegiate championships before changing to ice hockey in the late 1920s. Hirano represented Japan at the 1930 World Championships in one game and the 1936 Winter Olympics in two games, the only two major pre-war international events with Japanese participation. He played an additional 22 friendlies for Japan, scoring three goals. The left-winger was noted for his fine skating. Hirano had graduated before going to the Winter Olympics and worked as a doctor in Mukden.
