Josef Horešovský

Josef Horešovský was a defenseman who played in the Czechoslovakia Extraliga from 1962-78 with various clubs. He represented TJ Poldi SONP Kladno in 1962-65, ČKD Praha in 1965-69 and 1971-76, HC Dukla Jihlava in 1969-71, and finishing his career with Motor České Budějovice in 1976-78. He never played professionally in North America but in 1972 was chosen by the Calgary Broncos of the World Hockey Association (WHA) in the General Player Draft. Three players were signed that year by North American clubs – Horešovský, Jan Havel, and Tomáš Jelínek, but only Jelínek ever played in North America, as the Czechoslovakian government reneged on its agreement to let the other players leave the country.

Horešovský competed in the 1968 and 1972 Winter Olympics, winning a silver medal in 1968 and a bronze medal in 1972. He competed at five World Championships for Czechoslovakia, winning a medal each time with gold in 1972, silver in 1971, and bronzes in 1969-70 and 1973. Horešovský was named the best defenseman at the 1969 World Championships.
