Biography

Ice hockey goalkeeper Fredl Huber played domestically with Wiener (Vienna) Eislauf-Verein (1946-49), EC Loeben (1949-59), Klagenfurter AC (1959-63), and EK Zell am See (from 1963). He helped Wiener EV win the Austrian Championships from 1947-49.

Huber also played for Austria at the 1947 World Championships, helping them to a bronze medal. As the Worlds doubled as the European Championships in that era, he also gained the European bronze medal. At the 1948 St. Moritz Winter Olympics the Austrian team finished seventh.

Huber was also a very good tennis player after World War II and won four national titles in the men’s doubles (with Hans Redl) and one in the men’s singles. He played 27 Davis Cup matches for Austria. In 1956, Huber, known as “Freddie” in the British press, beat the 1951 winner, and British Davis Cup player, Geoffrey Paish in four sets to win the singles at the British Covered Court Championships.

Also that year he beat Welshman Michael Davies in five sets to win the Welsh Lawn Tennis Championship, one of several international tournaments Huber played from 1948-58. Acrobatic and eccentric, Huber was seen as one of the first entertainers in Modern tennis play.
