Martti Huhtala won his first medal – a bronze – at the 1943 Finnish Championships in Nordic combined. He would later win a silver in 1947 and gold in 1948 in Nordic combined at the Finnish Championships. In 1945 he recorded his only victory in Nordic combined at the Lahti Ski Games. Huhtala made his international début at the 1948 Olympic Winter Games, where he won silver behind fellow teammate Heikki Hasu in Nordic combined and was tenth in the 18 km cross-country. Huhtala made his last international appearance at the 1950 World Championships, where he was seventh in Nordic combined and 20th in the 18 km cross-country. By profession Huhtala was a soldier, who eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He also was the president of Ounasvaaran Hiihtoseura from 1955-56 and 1968-71 and later worked as a bank manager.
