Ice hockey forward Ernst Höfner played with Augsburger EV (1974-79), SC Riessersee (1979-82), and finally Sportbund Rosenheim (1982-92). In 1981 he won the West German championship with SC Riessersee and in 1985 and 1989 with SB Rosenheim. In 1983, 1985 and 1988, he became the leading scorer during the Bundesliga Playoffs. In 1985 he was named Player of the Year. Internationally, he played at the 1980 Lake Placid and the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics and at six World Championships, earning 140 caps and scoring 40 goals. He was the leading scorer at the 1981 Worlds, and retired after the 1987 Worlds.
After his active career Höfner went into coaching. Starting with SB Rosenheim, he then moved to lower placed clubs SC Riessersse and EC Bad Tölz, all former Bundesliga clubs. From 1998 he was assistant coach of the German national team and also head coach of the U20 youth national team.
