Biography

As a specialist in the shorter distances, Bernt Jansson benefited from the introduction of national and international sprint championships in the early 1970s, just as he moved from the juniors to the seniors. Between 1971 and 1991, Jansson raced in 14 Swedish Sprint Championships, his best result a 3rd place in 1977, when he also won the first 1,000 m. He twice qualified for the World Sprint Championships (1976-77), placing 11th and 16th. He only qualified for the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics as a reserve, but when Oloph Granath was struck by the flu that went around the Olympic Village, Jansson was called up for the 1,000 m. Skating in the final pair with ice conditions deteriorating rapidly, he placed last.

Personal Bests: 500 – 39.0 (1979); 1000 – 1:19.4 (1976); 1500 – 2:04.97 (1976); 5000 – 8:15.0 (1970); 10000 – 17:44.3 (1980).
